The bicycle industry is about to kill itself

The pedelec as it is described today in the EN 1494/ISO 4210-10 will not survive. Technical Standards - driver or threshold for market success and innovation! The key role of Standardization and Legislation - Part 2.

Theory: The pedelec is the successor* of the pure muscle power bicycle
„My theory is that the pedelec is the successor* of the pure muscle power bicycleBut only if the pedelec will keep the same legal status as it is granted to the bicycle today we will have bicycles in the future.

Very important is to not become a motorcycle.

But technically speaking: Pedelecs are motorcycles.

Because they have a motor. We will see the difference later.

Minimum age, insurance, helmet, driver license
Reality Today: The pedelec as it is described today in the EU Pedelec Standard (called here EPAC as well in the draft ISO 4210-10) will not survive.

It will be for good reasons transferred into a vehicle with minimum age, with separate insurance, mandatory helmet, maybe driver license,…

This should not be a bicycle
Why? Because it is defined in the Standard and there it is possible to build vehicles which are actually motorcycles because you just have to move the pedals.

But the motor can deliver actually 99% of the power so it is de facto a motorcycle.

When you combine this with the age limit, this means that, let´s say an 8 year old kid which, lets say has a weight of 30kg, can take such a bike with 250W nominal rated power, which means that peak power is may be 800W, this kid can go on a continuously with an insane acceleration with this bike without real input - this is dangerous.

And for sure, this should not be a bicycle.

The bicycle industry is about to kill itself
If you continue this, the bicycle industry is about to kill itself at this moment by just looking away and hoping that nothing will happen. But this is a stupid idea.

*Do not get me wrong here, there will always be pure muscle power bicycles around - but my prediction is that they will loose their importance as mass mobility devices almost completely down the road.
