Pedelec Gate - What could stop the market to grow?

The key role of Standardization and Legislation - Part 1
"If you look back to the history of the bicycle, the mechanical standards have been a driver to make the bicycle an industrial product for everyone: foldable, easy to maintenance, long cycle life.

Actually, the cycle life comes from a long life of a bicycle.  

Why is this possible?
Because if let’s say your rim is broken after 20 years, you can go to any bicycle shop in the world and you will find not the exact rim as 20 years ago, but the rim works with the tires and the spokes and your bicycle.

So, the bike mechanic can fix your bike and you can ride another 20 years.This is the gorgeous thing for standards and electrically, unfortunately not possible at all today and manufacturers are very happy to provide you a technology where they continue production of spare parts 6 years down the road.  

This means after 20 years, if you need to have a spare display or button or a charger, they will tell you: „We are so sorry, not available any more.“ 

As a result, you throw away your complete electric bicycle, worth 2,000 3,000 4,000 5,000 or 6,000 euros. 

Very annoying and that’s why we need standards which allow long cycle life also for pedelecs. 

What could stop the market to grow?
  1. Unsolved legal status of the pedelec in general.
    It needs a technical definition: What is a pedelec? 
  1. Stupid behavior of the industry.
    Volkswagen and many others managed to have the Diesel Gate - Volkswagen is just the frontrunner who managed to be in the center of attention.

    I would say we also have the Pedelec Gate.

    But so far no-one cares - which is actually lying to the consumers and the lawmakers!
    This means that, I would say, 99.5% of all manufacturers sell illegal stuff which is not fulfilling the technical description which we have in the standards which we have in legislation.

    It´ s kind of, I would not say lying, but creative interpretation of something which is simply technically not correct.
  2. Safety hazards by missing minimum safety standards, laws and enforcement…

  3. Tampering not taken seriously enough!
    Actually, manufacturers say in public: „We don’t like tampering."

    But on the other hand they make it super easy and often they know exactly that their customers decide for their brand because of easy tampering."
