LEVs tested at Challenge Bibendum

ExtraEnergy team members were involved in the pedelec and e-bike testings at Challenge Bibendum in June 2006. A report by Susanne Bruesch.
 

 
The technical tests at Challenge Bibendum technical tests were conducted at the CERAM, the automotive test track and research facility in Mortefontaine near Paris on June 8 and 9, 2006. Thanks to the engage-
ment of EV-ShowRoom from Lyon and the support of ExtraEnergy the following LEVs took part in the testings that included acceleration, braking, noise, and energy efficiency: Biketec C- und T-Flyer, Heinzmann Estelle Elegance und Comfort, Prima JoeGo, Sachs Alu-Touring, MVE SunStar, and MVE BionX.

Matra participated with the i-step (once WaveCrest TidalForce) and their Hybrid-model with modified
BionX drive unit. Shanghai Forever took part with two heavy electric scooters and an e-bike. EVT had an electric scooter in the test and the Technical University of Esslingen, Germany, presented a partly covered recumbent, the Ergolite Glider 2.

Acceleration and Braking Tests
On a test distance of 100m, the pedelec test riders pedaled with full powerd. All plain electric vehicles including e-bikes turned the throttle to the maximum. During test rides, the testers wore a heavy backpack which carried the measuring equipment. After 100m of acceleration a signal demanded for breaking to a full stop. The braking distance was measured beginning at 30 km/h down to 0 km/h.

Noise Test
This test was conducted by riders of Challenge Bibendum on a track that was surrounded by noise detectors.

Energy Efficiency Test
This test required for pedelecs to go 22 kilometers in 56 minutes. In other words: 8 laps on a round course of approx. 2.7km allowing 7 minutes per lap. Penalty points were given for riding too fast or too slow on total time. For e-bikes and scooters the time was even tighter. At least, the surface was paved and mostly flat. On each round the riders had to stop in 6 places for 10 seconds to simulate every-day use a little better. The batteries where charged after the test to find out how much energy each vehicle used.

Results in four Categories
The official test results can be downloaded from the link below. They are given in four categories from A to D and can be regarded as points of reference. As each bike was  ridden by one tester only and almost each bike by a different tester the results can hardly be compared to each other.
