Hercules Cargo

With its ZEG brand, Hercules has become the first of the major players in the German cycle market to promote a cargo pedelec. So the roomy Hercules “Cargo” marks a significant moment.

The box of the “Cargo” is the largest in the test, at 340 litres, but despite this it doesn’t project beyond the wide frame. And although the bike looks quite massive as a whole, it’s pleasant to ride. Testers praised the solid roadholding and good ride stability, even when loaded. The separable front end is unique: as pictured it can be rolled into a lift or through a supermarket. In the family version which is also available, the front section can be used as a separate buggy. The stepless gearing on the “Cargo” provides excellent comfort in use, although adjusting the cadence is only possible via the display, and this takes longer than with a twist grip – a disadvantage when climbing. Furthermore, the NuVinci transmission absorbs some of the power from the motor, and this bike is one of the heaviest on test. In the results the “Cargo” only achieved below-average power assist levels, and the range was one of the lowest in the test. Overall it’s satisfactory, but despite the good handling and very practical features, it’s not enough for a test award.
