This graduation paper presents an international terminology system for the different vehicle concepts driven by electric motor and human power. With this thesis, the term “pedelec” began it’s career in the industry.

The paper highlights electric bicycles, pedelecs, e-bikes, power assist bikes, EPACs, (Electric Power-Assisted Cycles), active bikes …all of which are different from the others. Complicated explanations were necessary in order to differentiate between the products.

The goal of this thesis was to make communication easier. After one year of research, the author – who used her experience with translating - created a system of terms that distinguishes between vehicle types and defines their names.

The most important breakthrough that came from this document was the birth of the term “pedelec” (Pedal Electric Cycle), defining vehicles in which muscle power regulates motor assistance.
