Raleigh Ashford S10 Test 2015/16

Summary: A top-specification pedelec 45 which straddles two worlds. Especially impressive on the Ashford are the integration of the battery and the successful overall frame design.

With its Impulse Evo drive system, Raleigh has taken the next step in the integration of electrical components on the bike. The battery pack is fitted into the seat tube, and the motor mounting, steerer tube and stem all look as if they’ve been moulded to shape. Even the frame lock fits in perfectly. Rims and tyres specially developed for pedelecs. So at first glance, a well-conceived bike all round. Riding confirms this impression – the 350 watt motor assists quietly and really lets loose when you pedal powerfully yourself. Speeds of 30 km/h, important for keeping up with the flow of urban traffic, are easily reached, and above that the electric assistance can be felt to taper off gradually. Whenever you change gear the power assistance is noticeably interrupted, so the gear shifting process goes pleasantly smoothly. All of the components on this pedelec are designed for heavy duty use.
