BMW X2CITY

A new form of pedelec. Takes a short while to get used to, and some serious foot action. Impresses with its stable handling on a wide range of surfaces.

Even on the gravel sections of the “Tour” test circuit, the BMW X2City pedelec rode very well, despite its small wheels. But with its unusual technology and the motor’s run-on, it’s essential to dedicate some time to getting used to it. But then the BMW X2City pedelec is superbly usable.

The motor is controlled via a pedalling movement sensor. If you move the pedal at the end of the platform in a regular fashion, the motor runs smoothly, similar to rotating the cranks on a normal pedelec. Test riders rated this ‘pedalling’ via a pedal on the platform as taking some getting used to, but acceptable. The ‘foot action’ is a legal necessity so that this pedelec is legally classed as such, even though it looks like a scooter at first glance. Hoever, here in Germany at least, there is currently a somewhat politically motivated tug of war going on about the legal classification, and the outcome is as yet unclear.

As a fun vehicle which folds up, it’s an ideal device for yacht or mobile home owners who want to use it for short journeys, and who will appreciate how little space it takes up.
