Bakfiets Cruiser long

This family best-seller from the Netherlands impresses with its classic looks and user-friendly Shimano Steps system – however the “Cruiser long” is no fan of hills.

As the name suggests the riding position on the “Cruiser long” is comfortable and upright. This gives you a good view of traffic, and of children and cargo in the box. Also reducing ride stress is the fully automatic hub gear transmission. Only when you start climbing a hill is it worth changing gear manually, because the automatic system chooses too high a gear based on your pedalling cadence. But thanks to the automatic pause in power assist as you change gear, shifts happen smoothly even when done manually. The load bed offers plenty of space: two children on the bench seat plus a week’s shopping or a baby seat – a real family carrier. Alternatively, two bench seats for four children can be fitted. Alongside the comfortable ride and a wide variety of practical add-on modules, testers especially liked the successful retro looks of the Unfortunately, the combination of Shimano mid motor and hub gearing on the heavy 55 kg “Cruiser long” is not all that gutsy. Combined with a rather low range this is the main reason why this practical classic just missed out on a test award.
