On 28 February 2013, emtas GmbH will give information about EnergyBus. The lecture will be held within the World Exhibition & Conference at Nuremberg, Germany.
E-bikes generated a sales volume of 1.7 billion Euro in Europe in 2011 and are now an important economic factor. The components of an e-bike use a network to communicate. It can be extended by additional components e.g. to charge the battery. Currently, there are different proprietary solutions in use, which are not compatible with each other. To improve this situation the EnergyBus organization has developed the EnergyBus standard. This open standard for components of e-bikes and other Light-Electric-Vehicles (LEV) specifies the communication and connectors between the components. The standardization offers a lot of advantages. Manufacturers require less adaption for different e-bikes, dealers need less cables and adapters. Customers will be able to charge their e-bikes on public charging stations in the future. This paper explains the motivation and development of the standardization and shows the reasons for choosing CAN as Layer-2 medium and CANopen as Layer-7 protocol. The focus lies on the presentation of the defined communication protocol that was developed as a joint development by the CiA e.V. and the EnergyBus organizations. It is a CANopen application profile, which contains parameters and communication definitions for different components of e-bikes. Finally the current state of the standardization as well as extensions for RVs and isolated power grids are mentioned.
