Summary: For when carrying capacity is the decisive factor: this family pedelec group test winner can take the strain, yet it’s still light on its feet.
Keep calm, even under pressure? It could be an aspiration for parents, but it’s also true for the Explorer HDE. Designed by manufacturer Kettler principally as an option for (taller) riders well over 100 kg in body weight, the Heavy Duty (HD) range of pedelecs are above all sporty in their design, and offer frame sizes up to 65 cm. But with rated overall payload capacity of 160 kg and power assist factor values which are more like those for an offroad pedelec, the Explorer HDE is also well suited to carry heavy shopping, or for extensive riding with child seats or trailers. And weighing under 24 kg, it is still a relatively light pedelec. The bold curve of the downtube works well for the looks, and the matt black frame is further decorated with chic neon green graphics, with which e.g. the cranks are also colour-highlighted. Test riders reported that the Explorer has very good handling characteristics all-round; only the wide saddle was criticised as uncomfortable. Nothing was found wanting in the rest of the specification, so the HDE notched up another “Very Good” verdict in the easy pedelec category.
