Summary: Powerful assistance and a very harmonious ride quality – this hardtail really captured the hearts of some riders, and richly earned its “Very Good” as an offroad pedelec!
Higher, faster, further! This seems to be the order of the day for electric-assisted MTBs, and Giant has used the new Yamaha Syncdrive motor to bring an extra dose of power to the table. Up to 80 Nm of torque, which thanks to “Zero Cadence Support” can kick in immediately, is spectacular. Nonetheless, the power assistance figures for the Dirt-e were still a little below the absolute top marks in the test. This isn’t necessarily a disadvantage; it makes the handling rather more measured, and test riders described the switching in and out of the motor as very harmonious. For faster riding, this hardtail with its wide handlebars was easy to control, although the many control elements can be a bit confusing – as well as the display with its remote buttons there is also the fork lock-out and a lever for saddle height adjustment: this could perhaps have been mounted under the saddle. Giant developed the battery pack themselves especially for the Dirt-e, and it has paid off, as it’s very successfully integrated into the downtube of the pleasingly designed frame. The Dirt-e is a real eye-catcher with a top specification.
