Global Market Potential of the Pedelec
„In this chart you can see the development of the car market in the world as well as the bicycle market and the electric bike market.
The question now is: Where does it go?
My idea is that it will totally go through the roof and that there will be many more pedelecs than mechanical bicycles.
Why? Because the electric bicycle has much more functionality and applications which is possible thanks to the electric assistance.
Its like a land-line phone compared to a cell phone. A cell phone gives you many more choices. You can call and ask: Hey, where are you?
With a land-line phone you can not say: Are you in the supermarket? Can you bring me this and that?
Pedelec Market Volumes Europe
This chart from 2012 shows how the European markets developed.
The blue bar is the German market and the purple one shows the Dutch market.
You can see that the Dutch market was in 2008 bigger than the German market.
But then the German market grew so strong that it totally grew much bigger than the Dutch market - and it is still growing.
Now, in Germany by 2019, we have probably more than 1 million units.
Even if industry players like the Netherlands say that the market is saturated, that there is no growth potential, it is still continuing.
Bicycle makers just don’t get the point that this is not a bicycle.
We have a pedelec which is a really much more functional product.
According to my expectations the annual pedelec production will cannibalize the majority of the bicycle and grow to annually 250 million sales approximately 2050."
