Roovers, Gijsbertus C F

IDbike CV The Netherlands

Gijsbertus C F Roovers

Born 1950 in Waspik, The Netherlands

Staff Editor: Please tell us something about your career and profession.
Gijsbertus C F Roovers: After my University degree in engineering at the Technical University in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, I started my fi rst job in packaging machinery with Bosch Packaging in Holland. There I was involved in the development of bagging machines systems for the aseptic food packaging in bags for 8 years. Then I joined Van Doorne’s Transmission as department manager of the mechanical engineering group, active in the development of the CVT pushbelt, the basics and the production suitability aspects. Also I was doing additional projects like a all steel timing belt for car engines and a CVT for bicycles and the design of various testing apparatus. With my business associate Bas d’Herripon we together started IDbike company in 1997, with the goal of doing innovative developments for the bicycle industry. We started developing an effi ciency test rig for testing bicycle drivelines and analysing electric bicycle drive systems. Some IDbike products are the “Swing” adjustable handlebar that have been used by Batavus (NL), “Recline” adjustable stem, “Simple Stem” both with JD of Taiwan and further the TMM pedal force measuring systems. Developments that originated from our TMM systems are the further work that led to the new electric bicycles like the Sparta Ion and the JD Spirit.

SE: When and how did you get involved in LEVs?
GR: Based on our analysis of commercially available electric bicycles in 1997 we decided to develop an improved modular drive system with superior performance. This led to the invention of the TMM pedal force measuring systems and the application of this
technology in electric bikes and fi tness equipment.

SE: What is your personal motivation to work in LEVs?
GR: At IDbike we are keen cyclists, both for daily commuting and leisure. I personally do about 10.000km or more yearly on my bicycle, long distance rides and cyclo-sportive events. So we are motivated by personal interest as cyclists and by engineering perspective and enthusiasm. I was following the patent literature on the PAS Yamaha system already in 1995. When we started IDbike company our testing facility found good use in the testing of the early systems and we pointed our development efforts on electric bikes. In the past 10 years that we have worked with electric bikes we have seen the systems improving and becoming a new strong product for the bike industry with a lot of added value for cyclists and industry.
