Herb, Frieder

ExtraEnergy e.V. Germany

Born 1970 in Pforzheim, Germany

Staff Editor: Please tell us something about your career and profession.
Frieder Herb: I studied physics in Berlin. After my study I started to work by Ballard Power Systems AG in Kirchheim/Teck near Stuttgart. Since 2001 I am still working there as an specialist in failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) in fuel cell systems technologies. Behind this work I started 2006 my thesis in Ulm by the ZSW „Center of solar energy and hydrogen research“. The thesis is about hybridisation of fuel cell system with battery‘s or super caps.

SE: When and how did you get involved in LEVs?
My fi rst contact with LEVs was 1991. I built a solar electrical recumbent bike and with this bike I participated the „Tour de Sol 92“ in Pforzheim. There I met Hannes Neupert. Today I support ExtraEnergy e.V. by the pedelac and E-bike tests as test manager.

SE: What is your personal motivation to work in LEVs?
FH: For the future we have to reduce enormously the CO2 emissions, if we not want to live under water. Statistically our main movements are under 10 km all over the world. Therefore LEVs can be an alternative solution for individual traffi c, especially for China and India.
