E-scooters to be Tested again in 2011

After a 9-year break, the ExtraEnergy organisation, best-known for its independent pedelec and e-bike tests, will for the first time test e-scooters again in the first half of 2011. The test will be conducted in cooperation with the Dresden University of Applied Sciences (HTW). Manufacturers may now apply for inclusion of their e-scooters in the test.

First e-scooter test conducted in 2002
Like pedelecs and e-bikes, e-scooters belong to the type of vehicles known as light electric vehicles (LEVs). ExtraEnergy conducted its very first e-scooter test back in 2002. Testing seized in the same year, because of a lack of products worth recommending. Development appeared to have stalled and most e-scooters on the market were cheap imports.

New e-scooter test in 2011
Now the market for e-scooters has a completely different flavor - it is filled with a wide range of exciting, premium quality products. Developers and manufacturers woke up roughly 18 months ago, thanks to a new way of thinking and the lithium-ion technology. Today the focus is on quality and new client segments - clients which see e-scooters as a real alternative transport mode.

The 2011 e-scooter test will draw on the experience of ExtraEnergy and scientific work done by Alexander Reuters of the HTW Dresden. The test will be conducted in 3 stages: a test bench stage to be conducted at the university, riding tests in the traffic of Dresden and an ergonomic test. In the last-mentioned stage, consumers will test vehicles for their handling and suitability for daily use.

Register now
Manufacturers and importers are requested to submit their vehicles for testing. Apart from publication of the results in the ExtraEnergy Magazine, exhibition of vehicles on trade fairs and internal counselling, tested vehicles may also receive ExtraEnergy test seals - if they satisfy the test team.

A study on the e-scooter test, completed by Alexander Reuter for his degree, is available upon request.
