A Battery-charger to take Along on Long Pedelec trips

Sunload, the Berlin-based manufacturer of solar panels and chargers, introduced a flexible and manufacturer-independent pedelec charger to the market. What makes it unique? It pulls electricity from either a solar module, 12-volt automobile battery, or a normal 230 volt power supply plug.

The activity radius of many pedelecs is limited by the ranges of their batteries. What if neither electricity supply, nor an automobile battery is available when a pedelec battery goes flat?

Well, that's when the clever guys pull out their mVELO Pedelec Chargers. It provides an interface between a range of solar modules and the pedelec battery. Among others, it enables the long-distance tour cyclist to recharge from a light, flexible and foldable solar module. The motorhome owner charges either from his roof-mounted solar module, or from the battery of his motorhome.

A German pedelec team recently toured Marocco on pedelecs. To be truly "powered by the sun", the team towed a specially-built solar trailer along. The batteries for the pedelecs were charged by a Sunload mVELO Pedelec Charger fitted to the trailer. Read all about the solar trailer and the trip on the team's travel blog at www.tour-de-sahara.com.

As a back-up charger for use on-the-go mVELO enables the more frequent recharging of batteries, keeping them in the optimal voltage range. Frequent recharging also prevents batteries from completely discharging, a process which leads to the premature aging of batteries.

The display of the very compact and light mVELO (140g) shows the charge status quite accurately. The energy monitor displays the charger performance (W), solar yield (Wh) and battery voltage (V) in real time. Maximum power point tracking (MPP tracking) maximizes the solar yield and the very efficient voltage transformer minimizes own consumption.
