Market of Pedelecs today - Part 1
"Today, we have only a few pedelecs sold in five main markets:
Currently, the Chinese government has a very big program to push electric bike sales by making all of the about 300 million bikes legal.
- China about 5 million units annually (average retail about 200 euro unit)
Manufacturers are in trouble to make enough to fulfill the market demands.
- Europe about 2 million units annually (average retail about 2600 euro unit)
In Japan, it is quite stable for about ten years, very similar products all over the time.
- Japan 0.7 million (average retail about 950 euro unit)
In USA, the amount of sold pedelecs is going up.
- USA 0.5 million (average retail about 1700 euro unit)
Where are we in general?
- ROW (Rest of the World) about 3 to 5 million (average retail about 450 euro unit)
On the title of the ExtraEnergy Yearbook 2017, you can see that in 1992, when ExtraEnergy did start, we had about 5,000 electric bikes that year.
>> ExtraEnergy Yearbook 2017
The largest player in the world was Hercules who has sold may be 400 - 500.
In 2017, 25 years later, we had about 250 million electric bikes.
And 25 years down the road you can see on the picture that there are all small bicycles. One bicycle is equal to 5,000 units which results into 1,6 billion electric bikes in 2042.
This means that at the moment we are still in the influence stage.
Wake up potential
The world market for pedelecs is still in its early stage. The potential is huge but sleeping.
We need the industry to wake it up by producing a strong international standard which defines the state of the art of a safe pedelec (EPAC).
This could then be referenced by local lawmakers to clarify which vehicles should be legally privileged to be treated the same as bicycles powed by muscle power only."
