Staff Editor: Please tell us something about your career and profession.
Andreas Fuchs: PhD in climate physics from the University of Berne, Switzerland, in 1995. Since then
professional activity as assistant professor, engineering-consultant and developer of drive-systems and lightweight vehicles, battery fed propulsion systems and project manger for e-mobility. Co-organizer of the velomobile seminars. Knowledge in climate and medical physics, biology, engineering, human factors and ergonomics. High-tech entrepreneurship education from EPF Lausanne.

SE: When and how did you get involved in LEVs?
AF: Since the early nineties research about lightweight vehicles such as velomobiles and aero dynamical single-track vehicles. Since 1996 R&D in „ultralightweight mobiles“, four-seasons human electric hybrid vehicles feasible for mass-production. Together with colleagues, built 5 prototypes of series hybrid cycles having no chain drive but a „pedalled generator“ instead. Feasibility study of ultralightweight electric scooter. Involved in the design of battery management systems.

SE: What is your personal motivation to work in LEVs?
AF: Human powered vehicles, assisted or non-assisted, are fun to ride if designed well!
Lightweight vehicles are, by absolute numbers, and for humanity and the environment, the most important vehicles on planet earth.
